October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and in honor of all those who have survived, and even moreso for those who haven't, I've decided to let you in on a little-known secret...
Tanning Causes Cancer.
Unheard of, I know. But in all seriousness, skin cancer isn't the only type of cancer that tanning beds and too much sun exposure is linked to. Sure, we most commonly hear of people getting Melanoma from UV bulbs and not many breast cancer patients can link their disease directly to their burnt skin, but think of it this way:
Cancer is basically the deformation of cells in your body. When cancer attacks your cells, whether they are skin cells, blood cells, or breast cells, it mutates them so your body literally starts fighting itself instead of fighting the disease. Plus, if one cell is mutated by cancer, most likely all the surrounding cells will be affected as well. This is what causes the cancer to spread.
So what's my point of all of this? I'll tell you. Say you contract Melanoma on the delicate skin on your chest due to too much tanning. The Melanoma has prime access to your breast cells, your lung cells, and even your heart cells. Who's to say it won't stop spreading? This is what happens to many cancer patients- they contract one form of cancer and before they know they have 10 more forms all over their body.
Cancer is no joking matter. We all know someone who either has had it or will have it in the future. Protect yourself. Don't gamble with your health, and your life for that matter, by tanning in a UV bed. Every single time you step into that bed you are consciously flipping a coin. There is a 50/50 chance that you will walk out of that tanning salon with some form of cancer, and for me those odds are just way too risky.
Airbrush is so important to me because I've had many loved ones die from all forms of cancer- lung, breast, skin, and heart. I truly believe it's not worth it to put my body in a baking oven for 15-20 minutes, but I also know that to be confident I enjoy looking my best, and more often than not that means having a great tan.
Never sacrifice your health for your beauty! Instead, embrace your health by being beautiful every day :)
